Home Interior Decor

It’s easy to find home interior decor tips on what to do, but what about the stuff you have to avoid? Here are some home design do’s and don’ts you may want to consider.

You Make the Choices

It’s okay to get suggestions on what colors to use or what furniture to buy. But in the end, it’s all up to you. It’s your home, so pick the elements that you are comfortable with. It doesn’t matter what anyone says; it’s your home.

Get Samples and Swatches

Don’t buy paint, flooring or fabric when you visit a store. Get paint samples and fabric swatches. Take them home. How do they look under natural light? Are they still attractive under night lamps? You might be surprised at how different the color and patterns look in the store and your home.

Choose the Colors Carefully

If you love red or bright yellow, use it. However, you don’t have to paint the wall yellow entirely. Instead, use a subtle or neutral shade for the walls. Let that serve as a background for your favorite color.

However, it’s also important to note the psychology of colors. Use blues and greens for the dining, living and reading rooms. These colors are relaxing and soothing. Family rooms and games rooms can have bolder colors like red. Don’t just use your favorite colors; use them to set a mood.

Colors also come in shades; there are various shades of red, green, blue etc. Think of these carefully when setting up the home interior decor.

Focal Points

It’s not necessary for every room to have focal points. But if there is one, the furniture should be arranged towards or around it. It can be the 55” TV in the viewing room or a piano in the music room, or something else; the same rule has to apply.

Arranging the Furniture

Don’t scatter all the chairs and tables in the room. Instead, arrange them in groups. Leave enough space between them so things don’t appear cluttered. Never put chairs or sofas near entranceways or walkways. Never put mismatched furniture together; they will be unsightly.

While furnishing is important, so is space. You -and your guests- will be able to better appreciate the room if there is space to walk in.

Finally, don’t base your home interior decor on trends. Fads will come and go; buy pieces that never go out of style.
